By the end of the 19th century, New York City required a new professionally run police department to manage the rapidly growing city. This building served as the headquarters of the New York Police Department from 1909 to 1973. It was later converted to luxury condominiums whom residents included at one time or another Calvin Klein, Christy Turlington and Steffi Graf.

Originally a manufacturing zone, the Soho district has evolved from first as an artist enclave to one of the premier shopping areas in the world. It is also the home of many Hollywood stars as well as the world’s largest collection of cast iron buildings.

Chinatown was formed around community organizations that helped new immigrants such as providing credit for businesses. The On Leong Chinese Merchants association founded in 1893 and pictured above is one of the oldest that serves this function.
